  • How expensive are air conditioning systems?

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a new HVAC or AC unit.

Repairs & Replacements

  • How long can I expect my new HVAC system to last?

The race  to increase efficiency and reduce cost has decreased the estimated lifespan of available products. Many factors affect the length of service of your system, but with proper care and maintenance, a lifespan of 15 to 17 years can be expected from moderate to top of the line equipment. However, very little has changed in the manufacturing of gas furnaces and most systems have a lifetime, heat exchanger warranty that can have an expected lifespan of 20+ years.

  • Is it necessary to change the indoor coil?

With the conversion to the new R-410A refrigerant,, the replacing of the evaporator coil is required. This is both good and bad. This replacement can greatly increase your efficiency and reduce electrical consumption; however, it can be an expensive part to replace. The new evaporator coils are about 30% larger than the standard efficiency units produced before 2005.

  • How do I choose the right air conditioning & heating system for my home?

All homes are unique and with the multitude of systems on the market, we suggest you discuss your options with our Kool Koncepts experts.  At Kool Koncepts, we strive to have lifelong clients, not cut-and-go customers. • What is covered under warranty?

    • Most manufacturers offer a 10-year parts warranty on their equipment with equipment registration.
    • Contractors typically only offer a 1-year labor warranty.
    • Some manufacturers still offer to cover their equipment under a labor warranty but others are now offering these warranties through a third-party.
    • We always recommend purchasing an extended labor warranty, particularly the ones backed by the manufacturer. It’s almost a certainty that you will have an issue with your unit within the 10 year period, where in most cases, the warranty pays for itself.
    • Beware of companies that offer warranties beyond 10 years or even lifetime warranties on labor because, in every case, there is a catch or clause to deny the claim and many force people to purchase service agreements that require them to complete expensive checkups twice a year.
  • Will a new HVAC system lower my bills?

Replacing your AC system with a high efficient unit is the quickest way to reduce electrical consumption. We currently do not offer any system rated lower than 14 SEER. With that, it is possible to see up to a 40 to 50% reduction in energy consumed by the air-conditioning system. Many companies misrepresent savings of up to 50% on your electric bill. This, in most cases, is both a dishonest assessment, as well as an unrealistic assumption. Keep in mind, estimated energy savings relate to the energy consumed by the unit. For example, if your energy bill was $500.00 and the AC system accounted for $300.00 of that bill, a 40% reduction in AC energy usage would reduce your electric bill by approximately $120.00, resulting in a new energy bill of $380.00. A far cry from the promised 50% off of your total bill!

Maintenance

  • How often should I change the air filter?

Dirty filters tax your HVAC systems by restricting air flow which leads to poor indoor air quality. For best results, check all air conditioning and heating filters quarterly. Changing your commercial HVAC filters is one of the simplest and most cost effective ways to save your business on future repairs and maintenance, as well as helping to reduce energy waste by up to 10%.

  • What is the difference on my thermostat between "on" and "auto" ?

AUTO means that the fan turns on automatically only when your system is heating or cooling air. Once the thermostat reaches the desired temperature, the entire system shuts off until the next cycle. ON means that the fan is constantly on and blowing air when your HVAC system is not heating or cooling air.

  • Should a thermostat be set to "on" or "auto"?

When the thermostat is set to “auto,” which is the most widely used setting, the fan operates only when the temperature requires it. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to using the “on” setting. Running the fan in the “on” position will continually circulate the air through the air filter, keeping an even temperature throughout the entire house. However, especially if your Air Handling unit is located in the attic space, running the fan will pick up the heat from the duct work in the attic and, if temps are high, will slowly increase the temperature in your home. The same is true of gas furnaces, the blower motor can be an energy hog but today’s units are now produced with high efficient motors that can help reduce the effects of this issue.

  • What do efficiency rating numbers mean?

An HVAC efficiency rating measures how well the air conditioner turns electrical energy into cold air. A higher efficiency rating means that your air conditioner will require less electrical energy to cool your home quickly. A good SEER rating is typically 14 or higher. The average efficiency rating for a central air conditioner in operation today is 16 but high energy-efficient models can have ratings as high as 23.

  • What does "Going Green" mean in the AC Industry?

Kool Koncepts no longer offers R-22 equipment, as we consider it a disservice to our customers. Although R-22 equipment is still being manufactured due to a loophole in the current law, the cost of R-22 Freon has become so costly, that it is forcing many to upgrade to new equipment prematurely. The new R-410a refrigerant will be its replacement and is said to have zero ozone depletion which makes it more environmentally friendly! When shopping for a new air conditioning and heating system, it’s important to be aware of the Freon differences and its related costs because some contractors still offer systems based on the R22 Freon.
